The girls and I have discovered a new go-to dessert…2-Ingredient Applesauce Cupcakes. This recipe has become a fast family favorite especially since they now know how to make them all by themselves (minus the oven part, of course). We love the simplicity of the recipe and can easily keep the ingredients on-hand in case we get a hankering for cupcakes.

Our New Favorite Dessert 

Do you know what else we also love about these applesauce cupcakes? They freeze REALLY well so you can always have them on-hand. Simply cook, cool, and freeze unfrosted. Then, when you have a hankering for something sweet, pop a frozen cupcake in the microwave for about 15-20 seconds and then spread with frosting, Nutella, peanut butter or other favorite toppings. So whether you choose to pop one an applesauce cupcake in a lunchbox or enjoy one as a nut-free snack (assuming you don’t top with peanut butter or Nutella), go ahead and commit this dessert recipe to memory.

  • 1 cup unsweetened apple sauce
  • 1 box vanilla cake mix (14-oz)

Optional Toppings

  • peanut butter
  • almond butter
  • Chocolate hazelnut spread
  • Vanilla or chocolate icing
  • Grape jelly
  • Dye-free sprinkle
  • mini chocolate chips
  • Coconut
  • Toasted chopped nuts
  • Whole nuts
  • Fresh apple slices


  1. Stir together apple sauce and cake mix in a large bowl until combined. Spray muffin tins with cooking spray and then evenly add batter to the muffin cups filling each 2/3 full.
  2. Bake at 350F for 16 – 17 minutes or until they’re golden brown a wooden pick inserted in the center of the cupcake comes out clean. Cool the cupcakes on a baking rack. Once cool, decorate with optional spreads and sprinkles. Store in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
