Ever since I was a little girl, the season leading up to Christmas was a special time. We would start our Advent calendars on December 1 and count down each day until the big day arrived. As time went on and I had children of my own, I continued the Advent calendar tradition (because who doesn’t want a piece of chocolate every day!). However, I’ve made some twist to help the girls understand the true meaning behind the holiday season. 

Advent Traditions

A few years ago, instead of Elf on the Shelf, I decided to start a new tradition with my girls that had a more positive spin on spreading the meaning of Christmas. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t have a problem with Elf on the Shelf. I actually have one downstairs and may work him sometime in the coming years. However, back in 2014, Ellie was very into angels and I loved the idea of using one to share the Christmas message.

 I decided to focus on words that she would understand like share, love, pray, rest, give and sing. Each day, we would focus on the word of the day and how the girls could apply it with a special action or kind word. I have continued the tradition of the Christmas Angel each year but in an effort to get ahead of the season (versus trying to think of a new word each night at about 11pm), I created a Holiday Kindness Calendar for children.

I am SO excited this year to share a simple way to bring kindness into your home this holiday season! Each day has a thoughtful and actionable item that the entire family can do. Plus, almost all are ideas that a child can do on their own (ie. a smile, a chore, a thank you). 

My goal for this calendar was not to create a list that would be too overwhelming, expensive or time consuming. Instead, it is meant to spark conversation, thoughtfulness and appreciation for others.
