If you’re an apple sauce lover then get ready to have some fun with these simple, clever, kid-friendly ways to use apple sauce featuring the fresh flavor of Musselman’s apple sauce.
I’ve partnered with Musselman’s to share these three super simple recipes and video with you! I hope you enjoy these delicious, kid-friendly ideas!!
Apple sauce and kids just go hand in hand. My friends used to laugh at me at lunchtime in elementary school because I would remove the foil top from my apple sauce cup and either insert a straw and sip or turn it up like a glass and drink. What can I say? It tasted delicious! Now that I have children, I have carried on the tradition of serving apple sauce in lunchboxes, at snack time and for dessert. And…well, it is possible that I may have passed along some of my lovely apple sauce eating manners to them too. Oops!
Because I’m such an apple sauce fanatic, I jumped at the chance to partner with Musselman’s to share clever and creative uses for apple sauce. I adore the fresh, homemade flavor of Musselman’s and their unsweetened apple sauce has such a sweet and fresh taste that the girls have no idea that it has no added sugar or high fructose corn syrup. It’s a healthy snack I feel good serving my children. Plus, it is SO versatile and portable. All big thumbs up in this mommy dietitian’s book! Be sure to scroll down to learn how to make the most magical, moist 2-Ingredient Apple Sauce Cupcakes, kid-friendly Frozen Apple Sauce Dots, and individualized Apple Sauce Breakfast Parfaits.
Skip the bakery cupcakes and make your own using only 2 ingredients—boxed vanilla cake mix and Musselman’s unsweetened apple sauce. Traditionally, apple sauce can be used a nutritious substitute for butter or oil in a baking recipe. However, in this recipe, mixing only 1 cup of apple sauce with a box of cake mix yields tender, fluffy, apple-kissed cupcakes.
Once the cupcakes have baked and cooled, they are delicious as is because of the fresh, naturally sweet, homemade apple sauce taste. However, if you’re an icing lover like we are, top your apple sauce cupcakes with a spread of peanut butter, almond butter, chocolate hazelnut spread or store-bought icing. Decorate with fun toppings like dye-free sprinkles or mini chocolate chips, crunchy toppings like chopped nuts or chopped fresh apple, or ground spices like cinnamon or nutmeg. My favorite topping is a swirl of peanut butter and chocolate. Also delicious and a close second, peanut butter and jelly on an apple sauce cupcake–divine!
Peanut butter, almond butter, chocolate hazelnut spread, vanilla or chocolate icing, grape jelly, dye-free sprinkle, mini chocolate chips, coconut, toasted chopped nuts, whole nuts, fresh apple slices
Another fun, clever recipe that children love are these Frozen Apple Sauce Dots. Check out the video (above) to see how Frances is able to make them all by herself. Simply squeeze small amounts of apple sauce out of the pouch and onto a parchment-lined baking sheet to create each dot. Then pop the entire baking sheet in the freezer until you’re ready to eat.
The best thing about these frozen dots is that they are a nutritious and healthy snack option for both toddlers and children. My girls think they taste like apple sauce ice cubes and love how they dissolve in their mouths. They’re an ideal size for little hands to pick up and pop as well. Plus, Musselman’s Squeezables have no artificial colors and no high fructose corn syrup making them dietitian and mom approved (by me!!). Be sure to keep a few Squeezables stashed in your purse or backpack for a speedy, nut-free snack when hunger strikes.
For a clever twist on breakfast that cuts back on the cleanup, try individual Apple Sauce Breakfast Parfaits. Simply start with an individual cup of Musselman’s apple sauce and add your favorite breakfast toppings. Plain or vanilla yogurt offers a creamy flavor that pairs well with the fresh, homemade taste while toasted nuts and granola give breakfast some crunch. Berries are a delicious way to add fiber and even more sweetness and, of course, some mini chocolate chips or shredded coconut are always a yummy add-in.
Let each person choose their favorite apple sauce flavor and then go to town creating a personalized breakfast masterpiece. For a clever twist on snack time or playdates, set up an apple sauce parfait bar and let each child choose their toppings. Have a child with a nut allergy? No problem! Swap nuts for sunflower seeds or leave them out completely for a yummy, nut-free snack. Being a grower-owned company that uses 100% American-grown apples, I have confidence serving Mussleman’s because I know the farmers’ pride is carried directly into the product.
Check out some of my favorite stir-ins. What else would you add?
