I am often asked by readers if I think their child is getting enough protein – especially at lunch. My response is usually always the same …

1. Think about the food consumed throughout the entire day and not just each meal when determining if they are “getting enough.”
2. If you are offering a variety of foods each day (and your child is eating them) such as fruits, vegetables, animal protein (beef, pork, chicken, turkey, etc), dairy (milk, cheese, yogurt), nuts/nut butters, whole grains, eggs, legumes/beans, etc then unless there are other underlying medical conditions, your child is very likely doing okay nutritionally.
3. If you are still worried your child is not meeting nutrient needs, have them assessed by a registered dietitian or pediatrician.
